SURABAYA

Project Partner: Yayasan Kasih Anugerah Indonesia

Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city, has many children who are at risk. Many children are orphans or categorised as neglected by the government because:

There are many homeless children in the Surabaya region. The figures vary but estimates are that there are hundreds, possibly thousands of orphaned children living on the streets or in slums.

Yayasan Kasih Anugerah, in partnership with HOHI, has opened a new children's centre this year. This home caters for 10 to 12 children.

A smaller home enables us to better cater for the needs of the children.

Each child in our residental care program requires three sponsors.

We are also planning a local capacity building project - a motor cycle repair school that will, in a small way, address the issue of unemployment.

 News Update January 2012

The Surabaya children’s home continues to do well and we are seeing progress in the children. We have 10 children in residence and 2 non-residential children. The children have sometimes struggled with school and several have had to catch up on missed schooling.
Passo We are planning to commence a fourth Indonesia children’s project in Passo Sulawesi over the coming months. This home will come under the Surabaya home and be managed by the Surabaya team. We are aiming to accept 10 children into the project from the Manado area. The children will initially be “fostered” by families we are screening in Passo before we commence the residential programme.

Recently HOHI had a small group of women from The Lighthouse Christian Church visit the Surabaya Children’s Home. Here is their report of their time in Surabaya:

“The home is very clean and well run. We did some craft with the children which they enjoyed. We took along some music and taught the children a few new songs. They were very enthusiastic and loved to sing and do the actions. The children were beautifully behaved and looked like they were doing extremely well. The house mum, Annang, loves the children, and was involved in the activities we did. The helpers/carers were at the house, and seem to be very attentive and well organised.”

A bag of toys had arrived from Sydney. Pastor Yasin opened this with the children. They were very excited to see the new toys; many of the toys were educational.
