Newsletter May 2011

Homes of Hope International continues to grow and we can report on a number of exciting developments.

Of particular interest is the progress being made on the new complex Medan. Building commenced at the end of 2010 and we hope to open the ground floor in October. This is a large complex that will eventually cater for up to 80 orphan children. The ground floor includes a medical clinic, church / community centre, and accommodation for 6 single pregnant girls. We will be able to care for up to 40 orphans in the first stage of development.

In a few weeks time I will be visiting each of our Indonesian projects, and will also investigate a possible new project in Sulawesi.

Thank you again to our many sponsors who faithfully support orphans around the world. We appreciate you very much and want you to know that your generous donations are changing the lives of impoverished children.

Newsletter – May 2011

From the CEO

It has been a time of personal change and transition over the past few months as I have moved house, married a lovely lady, and enjoyed an extended honeymoon. I am settling in to married life at Narrabeen and seeking to balance my priority list. Thank you to everyone for your kind words and encouragement. Admin News

Hello to all our sponsors and supporters. I hope you had a wonderful Easter with family and friends and loved ones. Just to give you a "back date" we received Christmas cards, donations and gifts for many of the children and were able to give each of the children at least one Christmas card and the Project Directors purchased presents such as clothing and items needed for school for each of the children. From the reports we have received the children were overjoyed and very appreciative. They celebrated Christmas with carols and food and gifts. Your generosity impacts them and it really blesses them to know they have sponsors and people who care for them. In this newsletter we have some updates from all the projects and some news on the progress of the Medan Building Project. Blessings to you and your families, Kelly

Project News

News from Medan

Most of the children in our Medan Project are busy studying for their upcoming exams as their school term finishes in May, so the children are doing lots of homework and revision each afternoon and evening. The children are looking forward to moving to the new building later in the year. The plan is to move the home into the ground floor of the new Medan community complex which we are currently building. They will move sometime in December during their holiday period. Agoes and Evelyn, the house parents, are doing well and do an incredible job with the children.

Jakarta Children's Home

Our Jakarta home has been in transition with the appointment of new house parents in February 2011, Prayogi and Nia Milka. This dedicated young couple have 2 children of their on so the facility we currently use is stretched to its limits. The Jakarta Board are working on architectural plans for a new building and some land has kindly been made available. We hope to have more news soon.

News from Surabaya

The Surabaya children's home is doing well and the children are all developing in encouraging ways. The new house parents have settled in and are getting used to routines. We ask for your prayers on behalf of Joshua and Noval. These wonderful boys have had a difficult journey and are now part time residents in the home. They come to the home every day and do their homework with the other children and they have dinner. We are proving the same high standard of education for them as the rest of the children. At night they return to the slum with their parents. Recently they have been diagnosed with TB and are having treatment. Their father has TB and is quite ill. Please pray that the boys and their father will respond to treatment.

Miraj Children's Home

The children have finished their exams and all have passed and obtained very good marks. They recently visited their mothers and returned with great testimony's. Two of our girls have been to Sunday School teacher training. The house we have been using in Miraj has recently been sold and we are looking for another house to rent and the girls need a larger home. We need fans, stools, dining tables and homework tables for the home- three tables altogether at a value of $250 each. If you can donate a table please contact the HOHI Office.

Maputo Children's Home

Well another year has begun and the babies who once lived with us are the young men and women of tomorrow. Joanina is 11 going on 16 and Lija loves to dance and sing on any occasion (and talks too much the teachers tell us) The boys tease each other and provoke the girls but still love cuddles and time alone with Ros and I. We continue to support Jimmy and Percina in the community with their families. In 2011 we again want to concentrate on their education and spiritual growth. Lija, Ernesto and Percina are in Grade 6; Jito, Ivan, Joanina, Luis and Jimmy Grade 7 and Crimelda in Grade 8. All of them need encouragement with their reading and comprehension and we have a tutor come in 3 times a week to help them. Statistics show that when God really takes hold of the life of a child it has a better chance of "sticking". It is our heart to see these young men and women are given every opportunity in God to grow and to be the future leaders both in the community and in the church. Thanks to all those who support these great young people. All our love Steve and Ros Lazar

Medan Building Project

All seems to be progressing well and according to budget. The building of the ground floor and the fit out will be completed by the end of September 2011. The children can move in on completion of the ground floor but the site will be very muddy and dusty, depending on the weather. It is hoped that we can continue with stage 2 immediately. The first floor (stage 2) is estimated to be a further 12 months before completion. A second floor auditorium is being designed with a view to building indoor soccer and badminton courts that would provide a stream of income to help underwrite the cost of managing and maintaining the overall complex.

Our Directors report that Walter, our only full-time staff member has left for two months of training so Dora will be spending most of her time at the HOH until he returns. Helping us part-time are Maria and Dora’s sister Li Hong. Moses (13) has been back with us about two weeks now and he seems peaceful, happy, and able to focus on his seventh grade work. We’re thankful to have found a new school for him. Ruth (13), also in seventh grade, and Esther (15), in eigth grade, are doing well in the ‘best’ local high school. Paul (17) is doing excellent in eleventh grade in another city. He visited (and taught!) at the HOH during February break. Elijah (13) and Hannah (13) are in sixth grade and both doing very well. David (10) is in fifth grade and is still making improvements in personal disciplines. Joseph (11) and Grace (11) are both in fourth grade and both doing well; Joseph is especially encouraged because his new house in the village is newly finished. Samuel (5) is in kindergarten and did famously even when Dora stayed in Hong Kong a month over Chinese New Year. Jeremiah (15) is very happy now, home every day with us. He has just written a wonderful testimony of the changes God has brought in his life so far. Dora and other staff, and one or more of the kids if possible, go every month to LD village about 30 km away to distribute rice for 50 widows. Last time we were able to also give each some cooking oil. We also have just purchased land in that village where we are preparing to build a ministry house for the rice distribution, housing for local needy, and other ministry.

What Your
Child Sponsorship Provides

Each project is different and provides unique opportunities for us to change a child's life. If a child is in one of the residential care programs they receive:

  • Schooling;
  • Medical and dental care;
  • All meals;
  • Loving, 24 hour care by trained carers;
  • Clothing;
  • Tuition;
  • Outings;
  • Transport; and,
  • Accommodation.

We seek to provide all that each child needs. This usually means that we require (3) sponsors per child for residential care.

  • Rescuing women and children at risk
  • Breaking Cycles of Poverty
  • Transforming Communities
